Reflection in the Garden: Are there weeds in your “garden”?

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

It is difficult to walk outdoors these days without encountering a weed or two.  In fact, it would be extremely difficult not to see multitudes of them.  The weeds that have sprouted this spring have now flowered and many of them have begun to seed.

Yesterday, I had an opportunity to pull out numerous weeds.  Remembering the magazine I had read cautioning against the massive sowing of their seeds, I pulled out as many flowering weeds as I could.  Over the years, I’ve watched in amazement as I caught weeds flinging their seeds into their surrounding.  At that stage, there isn’t anything anyone can do to prevent it from happening.  The plants were created in such an intricate way to self-propagate.  When the “stage” is set, all that is required is a gentle breeze that moves the plant ever so slightly and the trigger is released.  The seeds are flung and they land in the surroundings… BIG SIGH… which equates to more weeds that need to be pulled out in the near future!

As I spent time stooped over in the flowering bed, our Father reminded me that it wasn’t that long ago when I couldn’t differentiate between the new shoots of flowering plants and that of weeds.  In fact, there are still moments when I scratch my head wondering if one particular plant is good or if it is actually a weed.  He reminded me that it was only as I spent time in the garden that I learned to identify one species from another.  He also reminded me that it was only when I spent time in the garden that those undesired ones were weeded out.

As I continued to reflect, I began to see that our flaws and our sins are similar to the weeds in a garden.  It is only as we spend time with our Father that we begin to identify and recognize our many weaknesses (weeds).  Likewise, it is only as we spend time with Him that we receive the many healing graces to recognize that we need to permit Him to break our bondages and to set us free.  Try as hard as we might, but there is no break through without His grace.

I asked about the flowers and I sensed Him say that the flowers were there to attract and draw us and others.  Many a times, worldly activities catch our attention and they draw us to those engaged in them.  At times, we linger only for a moment because we recognize the dangers they bring, but at times, we linger long enough for the flower to seed and we in turn are impregnated with the seeds that are sown.

Father God, thank You for always being there.  You patiently wait for us to realize that we need You and when we return, You are there.  Thank You for opening our spiritual eyes, heart and mind so that we can see how much richer our lives become as we spend time with You.  Draw us close to You Lord and give us the grace to desire to bask in Your presence.  In Jesus’ name we pray, AMEN.

God bless,

Psalm 139: 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Proverbs 2:

1 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, 3 and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. 7 He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, 8 for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. 9 Then you will understand what is right and just and fair–every good path. 10 For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. 11 Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. 12 Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse, 13 who leave the straight paths to walk in dark ways, 14 who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil,15 whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways. 16 It will save you also from the adulteress, from the wayward wife with her seductive words, 17 who has left the partner of her youth and ignored the covenant she made before God. 18 For her house leads down to death and her paths to the spirits of the dead. 19 None who go to her return or attain the paths of life.20 Thus you will walk in the ways of good men and keep to the paths of the righteous. 21 For the upright will live in the land, and the blameless will remain in it; 22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful will be torn from it.

Jeremiah 24:7 I will give them a heart to know that I am the Lord; and they shall be my people and I will be their God , for they shall return to me with their whole heart.
